Freezing rain began falling in OKC Thursday morning. We got almost 1/2 inch of
freezing rain before the precipitation
switched over to sleet Thursday afternoon (about
2:30pm). We recieved an inch or two of sleet because the switch occured about 4
hours earlier than anticipated, due to very strong surface CAA.
Then, another band of fz ra developed Thursday night, which
dropped about another 1/4 inch of glaze on top of the sleet. Walking outside
was difficult, and the drive home on Thursday night from work was awesome (I'm
sure most did not share my sentiment though). There was a break in the action early
Friday morning. On Friday afternoon, we had the final piece
of energy move through, which dropped 5 inches of snow on top of the ice.
Some areas to our SW recieved up to and over 1.5 inches of ice, and
numerous power outages. Storm totals at my house in Midwest City (east OKC)
were:
0.50 inches of ice (Thursday) followed by
1.5 inches of sleet (Thursday) followed by
0.25 inches of ice (Thursday night) followed by
5 inches of snow (Friday)
Clouds did not clear out like they did with the Christmas Eve Blizzard , and the snow took almost a week to melt off (quite a feat at 35 N lat and lower elevation). Throughout the week fog developed over the snowpack, which also reduced visibilities down to 1/8 of a mile. I checked the snow cover maps during the weekend, and I-40 was snow covered from AZ to NC! Also quite a feat for a southern interstate.
I had a BLAST!!! We went ATV riding at my in-laws on Saturday, went sledding numerous times, got to use my new snow shovel, had countless snowball fights, built a nice snowman (Dylan's first), and I even got to make Dylan an "igloo". We really should have storms like this every winter...ok, a few of them! Oh, if it were only up to me. Anyway, below are pics and links to the storm and aftermath.
