Me, Kellie, and Dylan headed home after visiting my brother for the week. Mom and dad made the trip in their car, but took the south route home. Naturally, I did not want to leave the great state of Colorado, and talked Kellie into taking the northern "scenic" route. I was able to use this opportunity to get in a quick fishing trip to the Frying Pan River. I gave my fishing mentor Michael Smith a call, since he had fished the stream before, for advice. He informed me to go to MM 9 on Frying Pan Road. I did, after a quick stop at a fly shop in Basalt. This put me a few miles below Ruedi Reservoir on a small bend in the river.
Unfortunately, all rooms in Basalt were booked so Kellie and Dylan had to come with me. She was really cool about it though and read a book in the car while Dylan slept. Wow!!! Am I glad I got to do this. After my standard practice of trying a Free N Easy, I put on a small Adams Parachute (I think size 20). First cast, an immediate strike from a beautiful 12" Brown. It was my first Brown on a dry, so I was really pumped. I yelled at Kellie, and she ran down and got a quick picture for me as well. I stayed with the Adams and got about 4 more browns*. I had a few more takes that got off as well. All this and I only got to fish for about 90 minutes because the sun was going down (and the wife was starting to get bored). It was my favorite trip to date because of my first action on dry's, despite the small amount of time I actually got to fish. After my brief fun on the Pan, we headed to Carbondale to get a room for the night.
