Dad, Mike, Ravi, and I took an overnight trip to Gateway, CO (from Ouray). Gateway is a remote town in the desert of Western Colorado. Gateway is located on the beautiful Unaweep-Tabeguache Scenic and Historic Byway (Co Hwy 141). Hwy 141 winds through amazing canyons and western landscapes more reminiscent of Utah than Colorado. We stayed in a primitive cabin that Nikki set up through her work. The cabin is part of a series along a bike trail from Telluride to Moab, UT. We parked dad's car at the Gateway Canyon's Resort, and hiked about a mile downstream to the cabin. The closest people to us were a little over a mile away at the resort, and the stars were incredible in the clear desert night.
After a relaxing evening next to the fire, I got up around sunrise and tried my luck below a ripple by our cabin. I was not sure if I was too far downstream for trout or not. I was. I made a few casts, and got a take. To my amazement, I pulled in a very small catfish. Bewildered, I continued to cast and "landed" a few small bass. By small I mean probably around 6" for each fish. Although these were not trophy trout waters, I did catch my first catfish on fly as I fished on a gorgeous desert morning. After my brief fishing stint, we headed for Grand Junction for an airshow (which we ended up not going to).
