Near Ouray, CO is a sled run that will rival any other. The Sunday afternoon tradition is to grab the sleds and head up to Camp Bird Mine road. The road is plowed by the local sled crew to pack down the snow for optimal sled conditions, which also helps to build up the burms. They are well organized for the number of people they usually have out too. A truck shuttles sledders up the road, makes the drop, and communicates via radio to the person below for the green light. The radio person below holds any traffic, what little there is on this isolated road, until the run is completed and all sledders are accounted for.
The run itself is almost a half-mile long with several gradual turns that lead into a nice S-turn. The S-turn leads into another very sharp turn, which is closer to 180 degrees than it is 90. The sharp turn comes out into a long, steep straightaway that is all about speed. In fact, one can build up some gnarly speed through the entire run, if so desired...and it usually is. At the bottom of the run is a nice fire where everyone can warm up and socialize. Awesome, awesome sled run. I just can not emphasize it enough!!!
